Sailing Around St. Tropez

Every October, the upscale seaside resort town renews with its seafaring soul while most mega motor yachts are gone. The summer season ends with a week of sailing regattas known as Les Voiles de St.Tropez. Up to 300 sail boats (and 4,000 crew members) headed to the famous old fishing harbor recently to mark the 20th anniversary of the event.

Les Voiles embodies the spirit of the chic seaside town and its contrasts. Magnificent classic collectible sailing boats built 100 years ago compete with majestic modern boats whose size can reach 40m, the most advanced, designed sailing yachts in the world. It’s a spectacular show with both performance and grace.

Visitors admire the ships early in the evening as they get back to the harbor with bagpipe music, watch pictures of the regattas on a large screen or go on a boat tour to watch crews executing sailing maneuvers up close.

hiEurope had an even more envious experience boarding a 12-m Extreme 40 high-speed catamaran from Multi-Croisières / Sailing Evasion for 4 hours, sailing around and sometimes ahead of the racing boats.
